The facet joints are located on the back side of the vertebral column. They are formed by the inferior articular process of the superior vertebra and the superior articular process of the inferior vertebra 9 and are innervated by the medial branch of the dorsal segment of the spinal nerves L1-L4. 10 The best option for diagnosis is determined by a 50% decrease in pain intensity after local anesthetic injection in the medial branch that innervates the lumbar facet joints (Lopez et al, 2019).
